Bicycle NSW Commuter Challenge

The Bicycle NSW Commuter Challenge is an initiative to encourage and reward individuals to cycle all or part of the journey to work and to also encourage cycling outside of the workplace - for transport, fitness and recreation.
The challenge invites individuals to register and accumulate 500km of cycling by either riding to work or outside of work There are great prizes and incentives for taking part and completing the challenge including cycle computers, Bicycle NSW memberships, a range of cycling accessories and free entry to a number of cycling events (including Sydney's largest recreational cycling event - Spring Cycle 2010).

Sydney moves closer to a car-free George Street

Sydney City Council appears to have won state government support for banning motorists from parts of Sydney's CBD.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore's long-held plan to make central Sydney more pedestrian-friendly could start to become a reality.
The details - obtained by the ABC - are contained in a draft memorandum of understanding between the state government and Sydney City Council.
Private cars would be banned from using George Street between Bathurst and Market Streets with only buses and taxis allowed through.
Traffic would be redirected at Liverpool and King Streets onto Kent and Castlereagh Streets.
The plan also involves rolling out 40 km/h zones across the city this year and introducing 10 km/h shared zones where motorists will have to give way to pedestrians.
The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore says the ideas were conceived in consultation with leading international urban design expert Professor Jan Gehl.

Ride2School update!

Ride2School 17-3-2010 - The final figures are out! 483 schools participated in NSW - that's a stack of kids and some amazing effort by principals, teachers, mums, dads and carers. And of course all the great guys and gals at Bicycle NSW. monkeysee was happy to be amongst the action handing out free neon-yellow reflective slap bands - all up 15,000 free slap were distributed across the state... so there are a lot of slap happy kids out there!

Think it's fair to say a great day was had by big and small kids alike! Lets crack that 500 in 2011. Get your school planning now!

And a special mention - at Matong public School about 70kms from Wagga Wagga, the entire school rallied to have 100% participation in the R2S day! Yes indeed, under the direction of their great leader and principal Ian Lucas all 36 kids participated on the day. Much of the day was devoted to learning road rules, bike maintenance and safety clothing...here's a picture of some of the great kids wearing their monkeysee + Bicycle NSW free slap bands. Great job to Ian and the gang to help organise a great day for the kids!
